Maroon Rallies with Five-Run Sixth to Top Gold 5-1 in Game Four of ULM Blood Series
MONROE, La. -- Maroon scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning to rally past Gold 5-1 Tuesday night in game four of the ULM Baseball Blood Series at Warhawk Field -- the teams played seven innings. Maroon has a 4-0 series lead which means the Gold squad will donate blood to an area blood bank.
The tying and game-winning runs scored on a Caleb Knox single to right field with one out in the sixth. After Jordy Poche led off the inning with a single and Jason Hicks was hit by a pitch, Knox sent a flare into right. Poche scored on the base hit and Hicks came home to score on the throw to second to try and get Knox.
A walk and a fielder’s choice loaded the bases for freshman All-American Judd Edwards who laced a bases clearing double down the right-field line.
Knox finished the game 3-for-4 and is now 8-for-16 (.500) over the four-game series. Randy Zeigler, Caleb Clowers and Shane Ardoin each had a pair of hits for the Gold squad -- Zeigler is leading Gold with a .455 batting average in the series (5-of-11).
Joey Cesario provided the only run of the first five innings with an RBI single back up the middle to score Ardoin in the second inning. Ardoin and Zeigler led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Brent Gay bounced back to strike out two of the next three batters to get out of the inning.
Drew Granier (2-0) pitched three scoreless innings to pick up the win for Maroon in relief of Gay. Granier allowed just two hits and struck out three. Gay allowed just one run and scattered five hits over four innings of work.
James Jones (0-1) was saddled with the loss after being charged with three runs on five hits over 5.1 innings. John McDermid tossed the final 1.2 innings for Gold allowing two runs on a hit to go along with three strikeouts and a two walks.
The teams conclude the series Wednesday at 6 p.m.
