In a nut shell:A solid start by Wil Browning coupled with a five-run second inning Tuesday night helped ULM take down No. 25 Southern Miss 7-2 before a crowd of 2,012 at Warhawk Field. Jeremy Sy hit a three-run homer, Les Aulds followed with a solo shot and Joey Rapp delivered an RBI double in the offensive outburst. The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for Southern Miss (15-4). ULM (13-6) has defeated a nationally-ranked team in each of the past four seasons. The Warhawks beat No. 28 Southern Miss and No. 34 Tulane in 2008, No. 5 Arkansas in 2009 and No. 17 Ole Miss in 2010.
Arms race: Former closer Wil Browning may have earned himself a new job as the Sunday starting pitcher. Browning, who brought a 14.14 ERA into the game, allowed six hits, walked two and fanned five in a redemptive outing. Browning left the game with no outs in the seventh after loading the bases on two walks and a single. James Jones relieved and immediately delivered a 4-6-3 double play but a run scored. A single pushed the second run of the inning before Jones ended the threat. Jones closed the final three innings, allowing one hit and fanning two for his second save.
Heavy metal: ULM had multiple home runs in a game for the first time this season when Sy and Aulds went back-to-back. Sy lofted his first ULM bomb to left while Aulds banged his solo shot over the wall in right. Caleb Know walked and Matt Laird singled to set the table for Sy, who was batting ninth in the order. The ULM shortstop went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and scored twice.
Did you catch this? Right fielder Jason Hicks moved into the fifth spot in the batting order behind Rapp with Judd Edwards sliding down to sixth. Sy moved from second to ninth with Jordy Poche hitting No. 2 on Tuesday.
Gift of grab: Second baseman Caleb Clowers made a spectacular catch in shallow right field in the sixth inning. Clowers was running toward the outfield and made the grab over his shoulder with his back facing home plate.
Weird stat of the day: All four Southern Miss losses are to Sun Belt schools. The Golden Eagles dropped two to Troy and one to Louisiana-Lafayette.
