Peabody Magnet senior running back Jalen Richard has committed to Coach Todd Berry and the ULM Warhawks.
The world of recruiting can change over night as a little over a month ago Richard had 3 schools at the top of his list. Memphis, Louisiana Tech, and BYU were thought to be the leaders.
Richard commented on those schools in a previous scout.com interview.
"I have three offers from BYU, Memphis and Louisiana Tech, and they're all still in the picture," Richard said. "ULL [University of Louisiana-Lafayette] has slid up a little. I've got new colleges calling in and checking in on the knee and seeing how it's going. Coaches from Cal, UCLA and Kansas have called. I think all the big, big schools are waiting to see how I come out from my knee injury."
"I feel Louisiana Tech might end up stealing it," he said. "I'm real close. Louisiana Tech called me and called my coach. They told me that I would actually be able to come and jump right in. They told me that I can come in and compete and if I do well I can possibly play. They have some starters now but I'm not worried about that."
But from late November to mid December the ULM Warhawks jumped into the mix and made a strong case for themselves.
"ULM busted on the scene when I took my official visit to Monroe back in early December", said Richard.
"Other than LSU, they play the toughest schedule in the state of Louisiana and their nursing program is the best in the state".
I was real impressed with the academic standards at ULM and the people they have in place to make sure you stay on track for your degree".
Jalen tore his knee over the summer while at an Ole Miss camp, a school that was highly recruiting him at the time.
Ole Miss wanted me bad, their coaches were in constant contact with me. LSU and Florida State were also wanting me to camp with them but things happen for a reason".
Despite the injury that cost him his senior season Richard says he still has quite a few offers as well as still getting hand written letters from UCLA.
I've learned that no matter where you play your college ball the NFL scouts will find you if your good enough".
Jalen is 5'9 and 195 pounds and says that he is the type of back that ULM has been looking for.
"Their other backs are kind of downhill runners, more pro-style running backs. I am suited for the spread offense. They want to move me around in the offense and if my knee responds(fully cleared in February) well I won't redshirt, they are expecting me to come in and play".
Jalen makes commitment #10 for ULM but says Southern Miss has entered the picture recently. The McNeese coach that went to SMISS is recruiting me their now. They haven't offered yet but if they did I would have to consider all my options. Right now I am a solid commit to ULM".
