Drew Graham controlled the tempo of the game from the start keeping the Golden Eagles off balance all night mixing a fast ball with a breaking ball striking out 7 batters and walking 4. Graham finished with a line of 7 1/3 innings pitched giving up 2 hits, 1 run, walking four and striking out 7 while throwing 99 pitches.
Southern Mississippi starter Brian Leach lasted only 3 1/3 giving up 3 hits, 2 runs, walking four and striking out one. The 6'4 junior threw 71 pitches and had 2 wild pitches.
ULM reliever Derek Ward struggled in his relief of Graham. In the bottom of the 8th with 2 runners on he walked then hit a batter forcing in the only USM run of the night. If fact the Eagles only mustered 2 hits but had 9 runners on base via a walk or HBP.
In the bottom of the 9th Ward would load the bases again and this time third team All American Trey Sutton came to the plate. Ward was able to induce the ground ball to Ben Soignier who recored the final out giving the Warhawks the 4-1 upset win over the Nationally ranked Golden Eagles.
The visiting Warhawks only mustered six hits but took advantage of four USM errors. Two of them came in the top of the 7th that helped push the ULM lead from 2 to 4.
ULM returns to action tomorrow night when they take on I-20 rival Louisiana Tech at Warhawk Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30pm.
