Warhawks Boast Top 25 RPI Rating

The ULM Warhawks just completed a 5-0 week and in doing so have moved into sole position of first in the Sun Belt Conference. ULM also holds a national top 25 RPI rating have one of the best strengths of schedule.

After sweeping the New Orleans Privateers this weekend, the ULM Warhawks improved to 12-4 (5-1) and sit a top the Sun Belt standings. A couple of stats that jump off the page at you are ULM’s current RPI and SOS (strength of schedule) rankings. Currently the Warhawks have the 21st best RPI rating out of 293 Division-1 baseball teams and have the 28th ranked SOS according to Boyd’s World.

A strong point coming into this season was going to be the Warhawks ability to hit the ball and they have not disappointed. Just how good is this team hitting? As a team, ULM is hitting .338 and has a .535 slugging percentage at the plate. Through 16 games the Warhawks have three players that are still batting over .400. Ben Soignier (.449), Dexter Fontenot (.435), and Kyle Suire (.409) lead the way with Jon Prevost (.365), A.J. Siggers (.338), Matt Collins (.328), and Ryan McMillan (.304) all batting over .300.

The Warhawks have only grounded into 7 double plays while inducing 17 against their opponents and are averaging 8.5 runs per game. In the most popular home run department, ULM has launched 24 long balls compared to 17 for their opponents. Kyle Suire leads the team with 6 home runs and RBI’s with 23. Matt Collins and A.J. Siggers have four home runs a piece.

The early candidate to wear the “Ace” hat for ULM belongs to Senior southpaw Josh Lett. The transfer from UNC Charlotte is 3-1 through four starts and holds a 2.49 ERA with one complete game. Derek Ward has established himself as the Warhawks go to guy to close out a ballgame. The Junior has appeared in a team high six games throwing 12 innings of work. Ward (1-0) has three saves on the season and had a 3.00 ERA.

ULM returns to action this week when they travel to Centenary on Tuesday and then host Southern Mississippi on Wednesday.
