On a very windy day at Malone stadium, the 2008 ULM Warhawks dressed out in full pads and got after it in some live action.

Working out for the last time until next week (Spring Break), the ULM Warhawks strapped on full pads and went through some more intense workouts.

One of the more entertaining and certainly coach and player favorite drills was the one on one blocking drills with a running back trying to fight his way through the hole. The defender tries to take on the block and stop the running back, while the blocker tries to open a hole for the runner. (See photo below: Ryan Dercher vs Travis Eickman and RB Gary Frazier)

Quarterbacks Kinsmon Lancaster, Trey Revell, and Antron Mason worked with the Tight Ends to start the practice. Mitch Doyle, recovering from a broken leg was a full participant but was slowed by his injury. Zeek Zacharie looks to be poised for another solid season catching the ball. Some promise for the future was shown by red-shirt freshman Ty Kittle. Ty is a 6'4 225 pounder from Torrington High School in Conneticut. Kittle showed great route running skills and excellent hands. (Pictured below Kittle)

From there the wide receivers got more work running curl routes, out patterns ,and sideline corner routes. With a healthy J.J McCoy, LaGregory Sapp, Darrell McNeal, and Marty Humphrey, the Warhawks are looking very solid at WR. Expect Sophomore Al Lewis to contribute this season as well. A shifty WR with moves after the catch, ULM fans remember Lewis from last years scrimmage playing qb when he made the defense look silly at times with his scrambling ability. The ULM defensive line continues to dominate in live action. Defensive Ends, Travis Eickman and Aaron Morgan are flying off the edge and really causing problems as they are in the backfield on almost every play. Bandit James Truxillo has picked up where he left off in 2007, making plays all over the field. New comers Otis Stamps and Troy Giddens look to be fitting right in at their positions in the ULM secondary.

One of the big surprises this spring has been the play of running back, converted WR, converted back to RB, Robert Williams. Williams is quick as a cat and has big time cut back ability. He showed some of that on a swept left that he cut back on, made several defenders miss and accelerated through a crease for a 37 yard run. If not for the hustle of Defensive End Travis Eickman's down field last second shoe tackle, Williams would have taken it the distance.

I asked Coach Weatherbie at todays press conference what he thought about the play of Robert so far this spring as a RB."Robert was a running back in high school and a very good one. We moved him to wide receiver because we felt like he could help us there more. We wanted to find a way to get him the ball and playing receiver was the best way to do that. He is a little more physical than what you would expect from a 180 pound running back. "Robert was the best running back I saw on film coming out of high school his senior year", said Weatherbie. We signed him to play RB, WR, DB, just wherever we needed him most. We expect good things from Robert this year". (Pictured below, Robert Williams)

Some highlights from todays scrimmage was a 60 yard touchdown pass from Kinsmon Lancaster to red-shirt freshman Anthony McCall from Montgomery, AL. Fighting a strong wind, Trey Revell hit Al Lewis for a would be 65 yard touchdown pass that was dropped by the sophomore. Red-Shirt Freshman C.C. Carpenter of West Monroe, La, laid the wood to WR Jeremy Stafford causing a fumble that was recovered by safety Greg James. James had a wall of blockers and would have taken it the distance. Aaron Morgan (3 sacks), Travis Eickman (2 sacks), and DeMarcus Carmouche (1 sack) all recorded sacks on the day.
