The ULM Warhawks used the deep ball early and often in sweeping a three game series from the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders. Warhawk hitters mashed 12 home runs and are creeping up on the team record of 70, done just last season. As a team ULM has now hit 67 home runs. For the week, ULM hit 18 home runs.
If there is any doubt who the offensive player of the week is in the Sun Belt conference, these numbers will help clarify things. ULM outfielder Dexter Fontenot was on an absolute tear at the plate going 13/20 (.650), hitting 4 home runs, 2 doubles, and driving in 15. He slugged an eye popping 1.350.
With just three conference series remaining against FIU, South Alabama, and Troy, ULM (27-12, 17-4 Sun Belt) holds a 3.5 game lead in the standings.
While Fontenot was swinging a hot stick, he wasnt the only one putting up gaudy numbers. For the weekend, Kyle Suire went 5/12 (.416) with 3 HR's, 8 RBI, and 6 runs scored. Catcher Nick Maragas continues give the Warhawks pop in the bottom of the order going 5/11 (.454) with a home run, 2 doubles, 6 RBI, and 5 runs scored.
Josh Chappell was called upon when first baseman Matt Collins suffered a hip pointer and had to be removed from Saturdays contest. Chappell responded with a 5/8 (.625) average, 3 RBI and 3 runs scored. Third baseman Nate McMillan also had a great series going 7/12 (.583) with 3 Doubles, a Home Run, 4 runs scored, and 5 RBI.
