Kentucky Builds Early Lead; Takes 36-13 Win

The University of Kentucky built an early 21-0 lead on ULM and coasted to a 36-13 victory Saturday night.

The ULM Warhawks got a blue collar performance from red shirt Freshman quarterback Cody Wells, but experience caught up with them late as Kentucky took a 36-13 victory Saturday night against the Warhawks.

Starting for the injured Trey Revell, Wells completed 21/44 passes for 267 yards and a score but was picked off three times. His first interception proved to be the back breaker as Randall Burden returned the int 50 yards to put the game away.

ULM had their chances. On the second play from scrimmage Wells missed a read that would have resulted in a LaGregory Sapp 65 yard touchdown. The Warhawks moved the ball inside the Kentucky 20 yard line three times and came away with no points but yet did not turn it over either.

ULM drove the ball 32 yards on 10 plays but stalled at the UK 10 yard line. Jabour lined up for the chip shot field goal but Wells bobbled the snap and had to just throw it up for grabs resulting in lost points.

Trailing 28-7, ULM went on an 11 play 68 yard drive just before the half that ended on the Kentucky four yard line. With 7 second left on the clock Wells threw a pass into the corner of the end zone as the clock mysteriously expired. Coach Charlie Weatherbie was livid at the officials as he thought there should have been time left on the clock for one more play.

The lone bright spot in the second half was a 60 yard, 8 play drive that was capped off with a Frank Goodin 3 yard touchdown run. The score brought the Warhawks to within 15 as Jabour's extra point was blocked. Jabour also missed a chip shot field goal for the second week in a row. The 31 yard miss came after the Warhawks drove 74 yards on 13 plays.

The ULM defense was a bright spot in the second half holding the Wildcat offense to no points and just three first downs. ULM linebacker Cardia Jackson led all tacklers with 15 and recovered a fumble that was caused by Josh Thomas.

Statistically the Warhawks dominated the contest with 24 first downs to 18. 377 total yards to 330 and converted 63% of their 3rd down attempts (12/19).

The Kentucky quarterback by committee completed 13/23 passes for 145 yards, one score and 2 int's. It was Kentucky's run game that set the tone early. The Wildcats carried it 32 times for 185 yards and two touchdowns.

Special teams continue to be an issue for ULM as they gave up yet another touchdown in that department. This time it was a 73 yard punt return by Randall Cobb.

LaGregory Sapp turned in an impressive performance with 121 receiving yards on seven catches. Luther Ambrose finished with 8 touches for 84 yards and a touchdown and Frank Goodin ran the ball 16 times for a tough 55 yards.
