A 20 hit onslaught by visiting New Orleans led to a 12-2 victory over the home standing Warhawks.

In a nut shell: A bad day at the office for ULM across the board. UNO pounded out 20 hits against four ULM pitchers in a 12-2 win at Warhawk Field. Even with the wind blowing out hard to left, the Warhawks (8-10, 2-3) were limited to five hits. UNO (5-11, 1-4) tied the Sun Belt series with its first conference win in five tries.

Arms race UNO peppered ULM starter Drew Granier for five runs and 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings. Granier (2-1) allowed 17 hits in 23 1/3 innings in his first four starts. < /p>

Heavy metal: UNO’s Nick Swaner drove in three runs with an inside-the-park homer in a four-run fourth. Swaner banged a ball off the Maroon Monster in center and raced around to score when the carom eluded center fielder Shane Ardoin.

Gift of grab: ULM center fielder Shane Ardoin fielded a single up the middle and threw out Jerad Comarda at the plate in the first inning. Comarda tried to score from second but the throw from Ardoin beat him by a wide margin. UNO scored one run on three first-inning hits. Ardoin prevented a run from scoring again when he threw out Nolan Church at third in the third inning.

Did you catch this? Freshman catcher Nick Rome, a Ruston (La.) High School product, made his second appearance behind the plate as an eighth-inning replacement .

Weird stat of the day: Jim McGonigle hit Nick Wade and Judd Edwards on back-to-back first pitches in the bottom of the first inning. Wade was hit again in the sixth and eighth innings for the third and fourth times in the series. The NCAA record is five HBP in one game.

Infield chatter: “We never got into the game. We avoided the big inning early, but they were swinging the bats and we weren’t. They kept hitting and we didn’t.” – ULM coach Jeff Schexnaider.

Scattered hits: UNO stopped a seven-game losing streak to ULM. … The 20 hits were the most allowed by the Warhawks since 21 last April 17 in a Friday night game against Middle Tennessee. ULM had allowed 16 hits in a game four times this year. … ULM scored twice in the sixth but Josh Gill hit into a double play with the bases loaded. … Warhawk pitchers delivered five wild pitches. Luke Briley threw three… The three-game Sun Belt series concludes today with a 1 p.m. start. Jordy Poche is ULM’s projected starter.
