S Kevin Payne: Manning In, Payne Out at Free Safety by John M. Crist of BearReport.com, September 18, 2009 at 3:58pm ET
Kevin Payne Profile
It only took one game and one 50-yard touchdown pass for the Monsters of the Midway to shake up the secondary, as 50 percent of the starting lineup is being turned over from Week 1 to Week 2.
Danieal Manning told reporters after practice Friday that he will get the start at free safety Sunday against the Steelers, taking over for Kevin Payne, who just happened to bite on the play-action fake resulting in that game-winning TD dagger from Aaron Rodgers to Greg Jennings last Sunday in Green Bay. Manning played very well as the third cornerback in the nickel package against the Packers, highlighted by a sack of Rodgers that went for a safety.
Payne may be a more natural fit at strong safety, but that starting assignment will again to go sixth-round draft pick Al Afalava. Since Manning is likely to move to nickel back when Pittsburgh brings an extra wide receiver into the huddle, look for Payne to then get the call at free safety.
On Thursday, we learned that Zack Bowman will get the nod at right corner instead of opening-day starter Nathan Vasher, who was the other Bears DB victimized by the Rodgers-to-Jennings connection.
